My work begins as functional wheel thrown forms. I like the contrast of creating using ancient forms, materials and methods in a modern world. Sometimes, I comment on these contrasts by carving, altering, or marking the pieces with tools or found objects to reflect the tensions and changes of our times. I am most often drawn to using classic glazes such as shinos and celadons and lately have been working with unglazed pieces, which have been covered with slips and oxides prior to being fired.
