Bowlerama
Join the Bowlerama to Kick-off the Empty Bowls Effort The Brattleboro Clayworks is gearing up for the seventh annual Empty Bowls Dinner, a benefit for the Brattleboro Drop In Center, with its annual Bowlerama on Saturday, June 25th 2011. Bowlerama offers an opportunity for those who have little or no experience in clay to create a bowl to donate to the dinner. Annie Lauterbach, Bonnie Stearns and Alan Steinberg will be available to help bowl-makers get started, provide basic instruction and troubleshoot if assistance is needed. Dig your hands into the clay to pinch, make coils or roll out slabs into bowls, and decorate your creations with stamps and other textured objects. Because of their expressive uniqueness, hand built bowls are often the first to be chosen at the Empty Bowls Dinner. Space is limited, so Clayworks asks interested parties to sign up in advance for the morning or afternoon session: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Please call the Clayworks at (802) 254-9174 to reserve a place for you and your party. Children ages 10 and over are welcome, accompanied by an adult. Clayworks is donating instruction, clay, glaze, and firing costs. There is no charge to participate, however, financial donations are welcome. This year the Drop In Center has suffered severe budget cuts on the state and federal level, while the cliental has increased significantly due to the challenges of the current economy. The Empty Bowls Dinner now in its eigth year, helps raise funds and awareness to alleviate hunger and homelessness.
Empty Bowls Dinner
The Empty Bowls dinner is a collaborative event. Local potters contribute bowls, local eateries contribute their home cooked food and musicians contribute their talents. For the $25 ticket price, participants will enjoy live music and a delicious meal in a handcrafted bowl they take home afterward. All proceeds go to Brattleboro Area Drop In Center, a day and in the winter an overnight shelter, offering a community food shelf, support services and a place where homeless persons are welcome.
On Sunday October 9th, 2011 the Clayworks will sponsor the annual Brattleboro Empty Bowls Dinner as a fund-raiser for the Brattleboro Drop-In Center. The event will take place on Columbus Day Weekend, Sunday October 9, 2011 in the dining hall at Landmark College in Putney with two seatings at 5:00 and 6:30 pm.
Starting at 5 p.m., for a $25 ticket price, guests will be served a simple nutritious meal of soup, bread and cheese, beverage, and dessert. More than 500 handmade bowls are being donated by dozens of area potters, both amateur and professional. While eating, diners can chat with friends, old and new, while being serenaded by local musicians. They are invited to keep the bowl from which they eat as a reminder that while their bellies may be full, there are many who go hungry each day throughout the world.
The $25 ticket price allows the Drop-In Center to purchase more than 100 pounds of food. Beginning in September tickets may be purchased at Everyone's Books and the Shoe Tree in Brattleboro and at Penelope Wurrr in the Tavern in Putney. For reservations, please call the Drop-In Center at 257-2005, extension 108, or (800) 852-4286, extension 108.
